Jesus was a great teacher. He used familiar objects to convey the truth unheard. In His teachings, He used everyday objects like oil, light, salt, lamps, etc. And through them, He conveyed the Spiritual truths. This shows that He always considered His audience. This is a rare quality of being a good teacher.
Today, we’ll explore one such earthly object that Jesus used in His teaching to teach important truths about who we are and who God is.
Sparrows
Wikipedia records, “The house sparrow is strongly associated with human habitation, and can live in urban or rural settings. Though found in widely varied habitats and climates, it typically avoids extensive woodlands, grasslands, polar regions, and hot, dry deserts far away from human development. For sustenance, the house sparrow routinely feeds at home and public bird feeding stations, but naturally feeds on the seeds of grains, flowering plants and weeds. However, it is an opportunistic, omnivorous eater, and commonly catches insects, their larvae, caterpillars, invertebrates and many other natural foods.”1
Sparrows are one of the tiniest birds that God had made. And yet, God uses such a bird to share very valuable and important lessons.
1 God Cares
God is an amazing caretaker, isn’t He? He takes care of every living being: from the huge animals down to such small birds as sparrows. The very fact that He created the sparrow with such intricate design speaks volumes of God’s majesty and greatness.
Luke 12:6 mentions that even with such a tiny structure, sparrows are not forgotten by God. God knows His creation and God cares for us.
Today, if you feel that God does not care for you, then let this verse be your assurance that God does care for you just like He cares for this tiny bird, in fact, much more than the sparrow.
2 Humans Have More Value Than Sparrows
Jesus, then, goes on to say in Luke 12:7, “Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” One might think that this is the case because we are bigger than sparrows in our stature. But that is not the case. Then, the question remains: Why are we much more valuable than sparrows?
We are of more value than the sparrows because, unlike the sparrows, we are made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 mentions, “ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This verse testifies to us that every human being is made in the image of God. And it is because of this reason, we are much more valuable than the sparrows.
Therefore, my dear reader friend, don’t be afraid or be worried, but take heart because God, who takes care of the sparrows, will take care of you because you are more valuable than them.
God bless you!
