Throughout history, mothers have often been neglected. It could probably be because they are only seen as someone who cooks, cleans, and takes care of the house. They are often overlooked because our perception is that they are not achieving something glorious.
However, the Bible does not give the same treatment that the world gives to mothers. It views mothers from a different lens. The Bible gives us reasons to appreciate the role of mothers in nurturing their children, who grew up to later become the heroes of our faith.
In today’s edition, we’ll explore three mothers of the Bible—Jochebed, Hannah, and Eunice— and what we can learn from each of them.
Lessons from Jochebed
Jochebed was Moses’ mother. She gave birth to Moses when the king had decreed to kill all the male children. In such an adverse and tough situation, she kept Moses alive. For the first three months after his birth, Moses was kept hidden by Jochebed. However, when she could not hide him any longer, “she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile” (Exo. 2:3 NIV). If there were no Jochebed, there probably would not be Moses!
What we can learn from her is her extraordinary bravery and courage. She went against an evil ruler in order to save her child, who later saved all the Israelites. We can also learn from her that God is an amazing provider. The Pharaoh’s daughter took care of Moses and the king paid to nurture Moses. What an amazing role model!
Lessons from Hannah
Hannah was the mother of Samuel. She was unable to bear a child and because of that, she was grieving. On top of that, she was teased for this reason. This was too much for her to bear. She desperately wanted to conceive a child. So, she went to and prayed to God. She made a vow that if God gave her a child, she would dedicate the child to God’s service. And we find that God grants her request and blesses Hannah with Samuel, whose name means “Asked of God.”
The life of Hannah is a reminder that God hears and answers our prayers. No matter how bad the situation might be, our God hears our requests and answers them in His time. Hannah’s story also teaches us to trust in the Lord. What an amazing reminder her life is that God answers our prayers!

Lessons from Eunice
Eunice was the mother of Timothy. She is mentioned explicitly in only one verse in the entire Bible. Along with Eunice, her mother, and Timothy’s grandmother, Lois, is also mentioned. Eunice was a Jewish believer (Acts 16:1).
What’s interesting about Lois and Eunice is what Paul shares in 2 Timothy 1:5, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” This shows how both the mother and grandmother of Timothy instilled faith in him.
It is mothers who spend most of their time with their children. They instruct their children on most things. And more importantly, the children learn a lot from their mothers through their actions. Hence, mothers have a huge impact on the lives of their children. Paul understands this and appreciates indirectly the Godly impact of Lois and Eunice in the life of Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:14-15, “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures…” What an amazing impact!
There is a lot more to learn and appreciate from the mothers of the Bible. Not to mention our own mothers, who sacrifice daily in order to nurture us and instill faith in us. Praise God for such Godly mothers! Let’s appreciate all the mothers today and every day. God bless you all and all the mothers!
