Everything has a foundation. A building, for example, cannot stand on its own. It needs a good and firm foundation. If you think about it, nothing exists without a foundation. Today we will look at the most basic thing i.e. the base of our faith.
Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
According to Matthew, these are the last words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount. So, let’s see what Jesus has to say.
In this passage, Jesus talks of two men who build their own houses. They are differentiated as ‘wise’ and ‘foolish’ on the basis of where they built the house. The wise man built his house on the rock. At the same time, the foolish man built his house on the sand.
Both of these builders put so much effort into building their houses. Their houses would have looked identical from the outside, maybe even strong and sturdy. But what differentiated their houses was not something that was above the ground, but that which was beneath it.
Soon, “the rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against those houses.” The house on the rock stood still, but the house on the sand fell with a great crash.
What’s worth noting is that the rain, streams, and winds did not show partiality towards the house on the sand. The winds blew equally against both houses. Yet, the house which was built on the sand had a great fall. Why? Foundation matters.
Jesus taught his hearers that foundation was the most important. It was not the color of the house, the materials used, or even the shape that gave their houses strength; what made their houses strong (or weak) was the foundation.
In the same way, the foundation of our faith is particularly important. So, hearing alone God’s Word is not enough. It should be backed up by our obedience to it. This means that a one-time trust in Jesus is not enough. Obeying what He says is more important.
In this parable, hearing the words of Jesus is likened to building the house, whereas obeying them is likened to building the house on the rock and not the sand.
"The foundation in this parable is obedience to God’s Word—obedience that is an evidence of true faith (James 2:14ff).” [Warren Wiersbe]
May the good Lord help us not just to read His Word but also give us the strength to obey it.
