I have been a part of a small worship group when I was a teenager. It was great to stand in front of people and sing praises unto the Lord. So, I ‘know’ what it is like to be a worship leader. Of course, I am not an expert.
In today’s edition of the Bible Insights Newsletter, I want to appreciate the Worship Leaders and also exhort them with the Word of God.
Words of Appreciation
I appreciate your zeal to worship the Lord through the talents that the Lord has gifted you with. Thank you for using your amazing musical and vocal skills for the glory of God. Thank you for sacrificing the time that you spend in preparing the songs, practicing the melodies, perfecting your vocal pitch, and harmonizing all the various parts. It takes a lot of time, effort, energy, creativity, and dedication to stand in front of (an often lifeless) crowd and energize them with the tune of God’s melodies.
May the Lord continue to use you to minister to His flock!
Words of Exhortation
With these words of appreciation, I also want to exhort you with a few advice that will hopefully help you ground your singing and music in God’s Word.
Worship is Theological
Your theology develops and enhances your worship, and your worship adds flavor and sound to your theology. Don’t think that theology is just for the intellectuals or the pastors or the ‘full-time’ workers. Theology is how you view God. Worship is how you respond to who God is! So, in that sense, Worship and Theology are inseparable; one cannot exist without the other.
Worship reveals your theology. If your theology is that Jesus is only a savior, your worship will only be limited to the songs that portray Him as a Savior. However, if you view Jesus as the Sovereign Lord, your worship will be richer and deeper that the shallow ‘Jesus saves’ slogan.
Study Psalms
The biggest book in the Bible is the book of Psalms. It is filled with songs written by King David, sons of Asaph, etc. If you go through these 150 Psalms, you’ll notice that they are filled with mixed emotions. In some parts, the Psalmists are happy, while in other parts, they are going through deep agony so much so that one of them refers to darkness as his “closest friend” (Psalm 88:18). What you and I can learn is to take every emotion—not just the joy or excitement—before God. That’s what the Psalmists did.
Study the Psalms so that you might develop a richer palette of expressing yourself to God. When you spend time alone with God, bring all of these expressions before God. Make sure that you yourself would worship God first and then you invite others to do the same. Music can be played and songs can be sung, but true Worship requires more than music and melodies, more than songs and symphonies; it requires a submissive heart unto the Lord. Then, your worship will become fruitful. Instead of focusing on hands that are raised, you’ll focus more on the hearts lifted up to God.
Worship is more than music
Finally, know that worship is more than music. Music might end, the melodies might fade, the songs might cease; however, since Worship is more than just words, it must live on. Jesus said that “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). These words mean that Worship is so much more than music and singing; it is a lifestyle.
When you are led by the Spirit to do something and you actually do it, you are worshipping the Lord. When you obey the Word of God, you are worshipping the Lord. When you speak the truth, you are worshipping the Lord. When you love God, His Word, and His people, you are worshipping the Lord. Thus, worship transcends music.
So, don’t just lead people when you are on stage. Lead people by setting an example even when you step down. As Paul exhorted all of us, “…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Romans 12:1)
