Today, the internet has become a digital platform where ‘we live, move and have our being’. Social Media has flooded the lives of all the people across the globe. Virtually (pun intended) everyone has access to digital devices. People would rather live digitally than in the materialistic physical world. There’s no denying that the future is filled with such digital devices. We cannot run away from such technologically advanced space.
Since we live in such a digital context, I believe that we Christians have a great privilege and responsibility to share God’s Word. Privilege, because we can roam the entire world and preach about Jesus without stepping out of our homes. Responsibility because all of the followers of Jesus are commanded to share the good news of Jesus Christ (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15).
So, let us see how you can become a Digital Missionary.
A Missionary is someone who is sent out with a special purpose of sharing God’s Word with the non-believers.
Notice how (s)he is ‘sent’. If you’re wondering who has sent you, let me gently remind you that every disciple of Jesus is commanded to preach the Word of God (Mark 16:15). This means that you ought to go and preach where people are. All the Prophets went and ministered. All the Apostles went and ministered. Now, it is our turn to do the same.
Here are three reasons to consider becoming a Digital Missionary:
The transition from being a platform for promoting Christian Ministry to becoming a Christian Ministry itself.
Social Media are no longer just platforms for promoting ministry. These platforms have become places where ministry itself is happening. God brought this great good out of COVID. Before COVID, Social Media was mostly used to promote ministry programs. And now, post-COVID, a lot of churches and Christian organizations are conducting a lot of things online. So, it has become easier to be a Digital Missionary.
Christians are called to be Light in the Darkness.
If you are thinking of avoiding using Social Media for ministerial purposes because there are so many evil things happening, then think again. We, Christians, are called to be light. And light is supposed to shine not where light is already present, but rather where there is darkness. And the darker the place, the brighter we ought to shine for Christ. So, why not use our digital devices for the glory of God and become a light in today’s digital darkness?
Social Media is where people hangout
In the Early Church, one of the most common strategies of the Apostles was to go to the places where people gathered the most. This makes sense because when Peter addressed the crowd in Acts 2:14, the results were mind-blowing as Acts 2:41 shows that about 3000 people were added. Paul, Philip, and the rest of the Apostles did the same. The missionaries did the same. And so can we. Right now, the biggest crowd is gathered on Social Media. And since we are already there, why not just use it to reach out and share the Gospel?
The darker the place, the brighter we ought to shine for Christ.
The Next Step: What to do as a Digital Missionary?
If God has prompted your heart to become a Digital Missionary, praise God! Now, the next step would be to figure out how you will do it. Here are some things that people are currently doing:
Share a Bible Verse/Passage: A lot of people are sharing Bible verses with their non-believing friends. This is a great way to speak to them as the Word of God is alive and active, sharper than the double-edged sword.
Sharing others’ Content: Many of our followers are sharing our Posts and Reels with their friends. This usually sparks a conversation which ends up in sharing about Jesus Christ. You can find Biblically faithful content and do the same.
Discuss Trending Topics: While you discuss trending topics, try to bridge them to the Gospel. Apostle Paul did it in Acts 17 when he saw an ‘altar to an unknown god’ and used a saying of their culture to share about Jesus. You can do the same.
These are some of the things that a lot of people are doing and you can too. If you have any other ideas, please share them with us via email or comment. Thank you!
