Dear Christian addicted to sin,
I know what it feels like to play with sin. I have done it, too. I have spent hours, days, weeks, and months lying in the bed of sin. As a matter of fact, I had made a house of sin, and I used to live in it. I still visit it sometimes. So, if you feel that you are the only one, that is not true. We have all struggled with this! 1 John 1:8 testifies: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
If a Christian is an island, then sin is the sea. We are surrounded by it. But do you know why it is hard to fight sin? Because it is not just this world that offers sin to us on a silver platter (1 John 2:15), nor is it just the devil who moves heaven and earth to entice us to sin (Ephesians 6:11; 1 Peter 5:8). It is much more than that. While these are external sources leading us to sin, there’s also an internal betrayer who constantly drags us back to this house of sin. It is none other than our own sinful selves (James 1:14-15)!
No matter how strong the temptations are, please know that sin and temptation are never from God. He cannot be tempted, nor can He tempt you or anyone else. Temptation never comes from God (James 1:13).
So, what is the solution? Shall we give in to our temptations and commit sin? Never! I know it sounds very easy to do so. However, we must kill the sin that is in us, or the sin will kill us. Allow me to provide some tools to kill sin.
First and foremost, if you are a born-again believer, then the greatest tool to kill sin is already in you: the Holy Spirit. He is a gift from God that will help you overcome your addictions. He redirects your passions from worldly and sinful things to God. This process is called sanctification, which continues throughout your entire life. It is where you learn to love God more and, at the same time, learn to hate sin more.
The second tool is the Word of God. Jesus used the Word of God to face and fight the devil’s temptations (Matt. 4:1-11). It is the weapon that will help you kill your sin again and again.
The third tool you need to fight your addictions is prayer. Prayer helps you confront the strongest temptations, and Jesus knew this. So, He prayed and commanded us to use this tool as an antidote to temptations (Matt. 26:41).
Another important tool is to find a trustworthy accountability partner with whom you can share your burden—someone who will pray for you and lend you a helping hand to pull you out of this sinful pit.
These are just some of the tools in your toolbox to kill sin. This is not the end; it is just a starting point. It is also not a one-time thing; it is a daily process. So, don’t forget to put on the full armor of God (read Ephesians 6:11-17).
Let me pray for you:
“Dear Father, thank You for this day. Lord, I pray for myself and all others who feel trapped in this house called sin. For all those who feel addicted to it, please free us. May we leave behind these sinful habits and the sin that so easily entangles us. Help us to fight this battle every day. Remind us daily that sin will only enslave us if we let it. May we love You more than our sins. Grant us Your power to be free from sin. In Jesus’ chain-breaking name, we pray.” Amen.
