When people are asked to describe Jesus’ earthly ministry, the immediate response that comes to most of their minds is Healer, Helper, Miracle Worker, etc. When we analyze these titles carefully, we’ll notice a common theme here. All of these titles describe how action-focused Jesus was. Does this mean that Jesus was not a teacher or a preacher? Of course not! For Jesus, speaking a word and doing an action were both equally important. He preached as well as provided bread; He taught as well as performed miracles.
Let’s fast-forward to our context. Many Preachers, Teachers, and Theologians like us discuss a lot about various issues. We identify a practical issue, problematize it, write about it, make theologies about it, and try to solve it—at least theoretically. However, the issue still remains. It stays confined to our Christian or Theological circles with an ‘academic’ label on it. While it is good to talk about various issues and try to find solutions based on what the Scripture is saying, it is equally important to put it into practice.
James 1:22-25 reads, “But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.”
So, today, I want to encourage you to not just read the Word of God but study it.
O student of the Word, let the words we speak, write, study, and meditate, translate into action. May the Good Lord help us to obey our Master, who always walked the talk! God bless you.
Did you know that we’ve started Bible Studies online?
We conduct it on Zoom, mostly on either Fridays or Saturdays (IST). We have a lively discussion, going in-depth into the Bible verses while having a little fun on the way. We encourage you to be a part of it and be blessed! Here’s the link: Bible Insights Monthly Meets.
